Tractor Differential: Structure, Working Principle & Operating Conditions

Jun 12, 2026

As the core component of a tractor drive axle, the tractor differential has four main functions:

1,Further reduce the rotational speed transmitted from the tractor transmission and deliver power to the rear drive axle;

2,Change the direction of power rotation by 90 degrees, converting longitudinal rotation to transverse rotation;

3,Distribute power evenly to the two rear drive axles when the tractor travels straight ahead;

4,Adjust power distribution to the drive axles during tractor turning, enabling the outer wheel to rotate more revolutions than the inner wheel to adapt to different travel distances.

Main Components of Tractor Differential

The complete assembly of a tractor differential consists of the following key parts:

1,Drive pinion gear

2,Final drive driven gear (Crown wheel / Ring gear)

3,Differential housing

4,Differential cross shaft (Planet carrier)

5,Differential side gear (Sun gear)

3.1 Single Wheel Lifted and Rotating (Gears Fully Meshed)

  • Final drive driven gear (Crown wheel): Rotates driven by the tractor engine
  • Differential side gear (Sun gear): Only the side gear of the lifted wheel rotates
  • Differential planet gear: All planet gears run independently to complete power transmission

3.2 Both Wheels Lifted and One Wheel Forced to Rotate

  • Final drive driven gear (Crown wheel): Remains static
  • Differential side gear (Sun gear): The opposite wheel rotates in the reverse direction, and both side gears keep rotating
  • Differential planet gear: All planet gears rotate to coordinate the movement of two side gears

3.3 Tractor Driving Straight

  • Final drive driven gear (Crown wheel): Rotates together with the differential housing, and two drive wheels run at the same speed
  • Differential side gear (Sun gear): Two side gears rotate synchronously with the differential housing
  • Differential planet gear: Planet gears have no independent rotation and revolve along with the differential housing as a whole

3.4 Tractor Turning Left or Right

  • Final drive driven gear (Crown wheel): Keeps rotating normally; the inner turning wheel runs slower while the outer wheel runs faster
  • Differential side gear (Sun gear): The side gear on the turning side rotates slowly, and the opposite side gear rotates faster
  • Differential planet gear: All planet gears spin freely to compensate the speed difference between two drive wheels

3.5 Locked Tractor Differential (Side Dog Clutch Engaged with Crown Wheel)

  • Final drive driven gear (Crown wheel): Rotates together with the differential housing, two drive wheels maintain the same rotating speed
  • Differential side gear (Sun gear): Two side gears rotate synchronously with the differential housing at an identical speed
  • Differential planet gear: Planet gears stop independent rotation and move integrally with the differential housing
