How to Troubleshoot Backhoe Loader Swing Failure: Backhoe Won’t Turn or Cannot Stop Rotating

Troubleshooting

Two typical failure modes should be distinguished: complete loss of swing movement, or continuous rotation without proper braking. Follow the inspection sequence from hydraulic components to mechanical parts.

First, test internal leakage of swing cylinder. Swing the backhoe end to the limit position, shut down the engine and wait for 5 minutes. Watch for unintended automatic rotation, which usually points to aged cylinder seals. Second, inspect the swing relief valve. Stuck spool or insufficient system pressure will lead to weak swing performance. Perform pressure measurement, clean valve spool and reset pressure following official service manual. Third, check rack‑and‑pinion gear mechanism. Worn gear teeth and excessive meshing clearance will cause clicking noise and impact during rotation. Inspect gear pitting or spalling, adjust clearance or replace damaged components accordingly. Fourth, examine the slewing bearing. Axial clearance over 0.5 mm indicates severe wear, which triggers abnormal noise and upper‑body wobble during slewing. Fifth, check swing brake assembly. If the brake cannot release, backhoe will not swing; worn friction plates result in failure to hold position. Test brake‑release oil pressure and inspect friction pad wear. Finally, inspect swing control valve. For mechanical‑linkage models, check loose, stuck or poorly lubricated link rods. For pilot‑controlled units, measure pilot pressure and inspect pipelines & pilot valves; stuck valve spools will cause swing malfunction.

Most swing failures are caused by swing cylinder internal leakage and stuck relief valves, which can be fixed by replacing seal kits and cleaning valve components. Worn slewing bearing is a serious mechanical fault, which can be avoided with proper regular maintenance.

Maintenance Notes

Routine maintenance for swing system prevents most failures in advance. Grease the slewing bearing every 50 working hours while swinging to spread grease evenly. Inspect swing cylinders for internal & external leakage every 500 working hours. Check slewing bearing clearance and tighten bolts every 2000 working hours. Detect and repair minor faults early, do not wait until swing stops completely, otherwise further component damage and high repair costs will occur.
