Why Brazil Continues to Purchase Chinese Construction & Agricultural Machinery Worth 53.8 Billion RMB Amid a Machinery Market Downturn

Oct 29, 2026

Budget Cuts with Redistribution of Procurement Funds

The decline in domestic machinery sales in Brazil is mainly caused by excessively high financing interest rates. High borrowing costs have forced many Brazilian factories and farms to postpone expansion plans. Unlike fast-moving consumer goods, machinery can remain in service for years, so enterprises hold off equipment upgrades until financing conditions improve. Local machinery manufacturers suffered a direct revenue hit, with domestic sales dropping 15.5% year-on-year in the first eight months.

However, the market is not contracting across the board. While local demand weakens, the market share of imported machinery keeps rising, climbing from 45.3% to 47.6% year-on-year.

In short: Brazil's total machinery procurement budget has shrunk, yet spending is shifting away from local brands toward imported equipment. Chinese agricultural machinery, tractors, excavators and loaders are capturing a larger market share. An overall industry downturn can coexist with surging imports of Chinese machinery.

Chinese Machinery Drives the Entire Import Growth in Brazil

Brazil's total machinery imports reached around 22.2 billion US dollars in the first eight months of 2026, rising only 5.2% year-on-year.

Import data by country shows stark differences:

✅ Imports from China grew by 18.8%, accounting for 36% of Brazil's machinery import market;

❌ Imports from the United States declined by 2.7%;

🟡 Imports from Germany edged up just 1%.

Calculations show that Brazil's additional spending on Chinese machinery reached approximately 1.27 billion US dollars, exceeding the total 1.1 billion US dollars net growth of Brazil's overall machinery imports.

This means Chinese tractors, agricultural machinery, excavators and loaders are not only capturing new market demand but also winning orders from established European and American equipment manufacturers, resulting in large-scale supplier replacement. Many Brazilian buyers are switching their procurement lists from European and American brands to cost-effective Chinese-made machinery.

Tight Financing Makes Cost-Effective Machinery More Popular Among Brazilian Buyers

Strict financing conditions have accelerated supplier switching for Brazilian purchasers.

Buying agricultural machinery, excavators, loaders and tractors requires huge capital outlay for Brazilian factories and large farms. Companies must reserve working capital for raw material purchases and payroll even after purchasing equipment. Even if loan applications are approved, large equipment purchases tie up corporate cash flow for a long time.

As a result, buyers no longer focus only on technical specifications. Total purchase cost, down payment ratio, payment terms and delivery lead time have become core evaluation criteria.

As long as performance meets operational requirements, Chinese tractors, excavators, loaders and agricultural machinery deliver outstanding overall cost performance. They help buyers lower loan amounts and cut interest expenses. Many equipment upgrade projects suspended due to cash shortages can finally move forward with Chinese-made machinery.

Note: True competitiveness only comes when the total landed cost, including product price, sea freight, customs clearance and on-site installation and commissioning, remains attractive enough to win over overseas B2B buyers.

Procurement has also become more fragmented. Full production line orders are less common; most demand comes from partial equipment replacement and supplementary purchases of farm and construction machinery for existing projects. These small-scale renewal orders remain steady even in a downturn, creating great opportunities for small and medium-sized machinery exporters.

Which Chinese Machinery Sells Best in Brazil?

Import data clearly reveals real market demand:

✅Imports of oil and renewable energy equipment surged by 79.1%

✅Construction and logistics machinery imports rose by 20.9% (strong demand for excavators and loaders)

✅Manufacturing equipment imports grew by 6.7%

Chinese-made excavators, loaders, agricultural machinery and tractors perform strongly across construction, logistics, manufacturing and farming sectors.
