Shallow Tillage Only! Ideal Rotary Tilling Depth for Seedling Period

Deep tillage (15–16cm) works for pre-sowing land preparation, but it's forbidden for May seedling management. The recommended tillage depth is only 8–10 cm.

Crop roots have already taken firm hold underground; deep rotary tillage will easily cut and damage seedling roots. The core task of this stage is loosening soil and breaking hardpan instead of turning over deep soil. Adjust the rotary tiller blade penetration angle to about 15 degrees. A larger angle wastes fuel and increases the risk of root injury.

Many farmers still use deep tillage in May, which leads to yellow, wilted seedlings after operation. Remember this rule: shallow rotary tillage is preferred for seedling field management, never till too deep.

Full Gearbox Inspection Is Indispensable

Your agricultural rotary tiller has run for nearly two months, so a complete gearbox check is mandatory.

Check gear oil level: Park the machine on flat ground. The oil level should stay in the middle of the dipstick scale; too much or too little oil will cause mechanical failure. Refill gear oil of the exact same model if insufficient.

Inspect bevel gear clearance: Turn the crank handle manually and listen for abnormal "clacking" noises. Improper clearance will accelerate gear wear, so fix problems in advance to avoid breakdowns during field work.

Check oil seals on both ends of the blade shaft: Replace leaking oil seals immediately. Mud and water entering the shaft will quickly burn out bearings.

After two months of continuous farming, rotary tiller blades will wear out significantly. Judgment standard: If the blade edge thickness exceeds 1/3 of the original size, or measures 8–10mm with a caliper, you need to install new blades.

Many farmers hesitate to replace dull blades, which brings multiple losses: higher tractor engine load, increased fuel consumption, poor soil crushing effect, and low working efficiency. Never use severely curled blades for long-term operation.

Start-up operation: Disengage the clutch and lift the rotary tiller fully. Wait for the tractor to reach rated speed before lowering the tiller into soil. Direct tillage startup will damage gears and blades.

Field turning rule: Never turn the tractor while the rotary tiller is buried in soil. Lift the tiller and cut off power before turning at field edges.

Control lifting height: Do not lift the rotary tiller more than 15–20cm when turning. Excessive height creates an extreme universal joint angle, which may crack the tractor rear axle housing.

Clean Weeds Wrapped on Blade Shaft Timely

Weeds grow vigorously in May and easily wrap around the rotary tiller shaft during operation. If you notice heavy resistance and abnormal operating noise, shut down the machine and clear weeds right away. Weed entanglement raises fuel consumption and may burn out bearings under heavy load.
